- "Zaktan sank to the floor, stunned. What the Brotherhood was planning made the Shadowed One's schemes look like the idle fantasies of a harmless Rahi. If they were allowed to succeed, there would be no more Toa, no more Dark Hunters, just shadows and death."

Teridax's Plan was Makuta Teridax's master scheme to overthrow Mata Nui, which was conceived eighty millennia ago and was recently completed.

History
Teridax first conceived the idea to overthrow Mata Nui from the Barraki, who had been planning something similar. Using the knowledge Mutran received from Tren Krom about the secrets of the Matoran Universe, Teridax formulated his plan and assembled the Makuta to present it to them. A minority of Makuta were opposed to this plan, including Miserix, who was consequently overthrown by Teridax. The rest of Miserix's supporters were hunted down and killed by Icarax and Gorast under orders from Teridax.
Teridax's original plan was to impersonate Dume, and drive the Matoran to the center of the city with the Morbuzakh. His plans were pushed back when the Toa Metru destroyed it. However, he did manage to force the Matoran into pods. The next stage would have been where to force Mata Nui sleep forever, and awaken the Matoran, allowing him to be their new Great Spirit.
Once again, his plans were pushed back by Vakama, who, with his team, took the Matoran away from Metru Nui. During the short time Teridax was on Metru Nui, he conceived the idea that he could not just rule a universe, but be the universe.
Teridax's new plan included nearly every event in which he has taken part of during the Matoran Universe's history. Teridax infected Mata Nui with a Virus, which slowly weakened him and caused him to fall into a coma. Teridax then masqueraded as Turaga Dume, to win the Matoran's trust. The strategy of this phase was to place the Matoran of Metru Nui into pods and use the Kanohi Vahi to accelerate time around them, wiping their memory in the process. Afterwards, he would awaken them, proclaiming himself their rescuer and leader. Ruling over Metru Nui would mean Teridax could control the flow of power to the rest of the universe from the city's power plants, and let him choose when - or if - the Great Spirit should ever awaken again.
At this time, Mata Nui fell asleep due to the virus and the Great Cataclysm occurred all over the Matoran Universe. However, after the Matoran were placed in the pods, Teridax was defeated at the hands of the Toa Metru and the Matoran were taken to the island of Mata Nui, where he then planned to keep the Matoran away from Metru Nui until the time was exactly right, launching attacks with infected Rahi for this reason. Although the arrival of the Toa Mata was a setback, he was able to delay and exhaust them using infected Rahi, and the Bohrok swarms. When forced into battle with Takanuva, Teridax decided to allow the Matoran back to Metru Nui and threw the fight, leading to his armor being unexpectedly destroyed.
His essence floating in Mangaia, Teridax sensed Mata Nui was dying and realized his plan could still succeed if he delayed and manipulated the use of the Mask of Life, the one thing that could prevent the Great Spirit's death. Teridax telepathically suggested to the Piraka that they should seek out the Mask of Life, and though the band of criminals and thieves unexpectedly defeated the Toa Nuva who went to obtain the mask, the new team of Toa Inika were able to obtain the Kanohi Ignika, and then follow it to the underwater realm around Mahri Nui. Teridax followed them in Antidermis form, briefly possessing Matoro and then, in the body of a Maxilos robot, enlisting the Toa of Ice's help in a scheme to restore the Nui Stone, all in an effort to delay and confuse the Toa. While in the Pit, he was contacted by Gorast who informed him of the discovery of Karda Nui's entrance, causing him to order the best Makuta to invade Karda Nui. When the team eventually obtained the Mask of Life again, Teridax made a show of trying to steal it back to disguise his true intentions.
After taunting and fighting the Barraki just long enough so that the Toa could not save Mata Nui, but only revive him after his death, Teridax traveled from the ocean to a well-guarded and mysterious location underneath Metru Nui to perform the final task of the Plan. He had recently learned of the true location of Mata Nui, and he successfully entered a place far beneath the Coliseum, where the final stage of the plan took place.
Following the re-awakening of the Great Spirit, Teridax's plan was finally revealed to the various Toa and other beings of the Matoran Universe. After Toa Ignika awoke Mata Nui, Teridax himself revealed that he had taken control of Mata Nui's body in the short time in which the Great Spirit's essence had been absent, and now ruled over the Matoran Universe. In doing so, he had condemned the Makuta in Karda Nui to death, betraying them as he gained his ultimate prize. During that time, he killed all the remaining Makuta, save Miserix, around whom he created an illusion to convince everyone - including Miserix himself - that he was a picture, to stop them from opposing him. After taking control of Mata Nui's body, he banished Mata Nui's mind and spirit into the Kanohi Ignika, and then shot the mask, still holding the Great Spirit's mind, out of the Matoran Universe, and began a period of darkness for the Matoran.
Quotes
- "Little Toa, you have not yet begun to see even the barest outlines of my plans. I have schemes within schemes that would boggle your feeble mind. You may counter one, but there are a thousand more of which you know nothing. Even my ... setbacks ... are planned for, and so I shall win in the end."
- — Teridax to Vakama, Time Trap
- "But it was not until the failed rebellion of the Barraki that the Makuta of Metru Nui began to think maybe, just maybe, something could be done. But his plan extended beyond just Mata Nui's defeat. No, it was a labyrinthine scheme; a plot that drew into its web multiple teams of Toa, Dark Hunters, Bohrok, Visorak, and more. And yet despite all its twists and turns, the plan was also breathtaking in its simplicity."
- — Teridax's thoughts, Into the Darkness
- "Teridax has always been fond of gambles. His entire plan is a colossal wager against destiny. If all do their part, then perhaps, maybe, ultimate power will be ours, he pledges."
- — Icarax to Vican, Shadows in the Sky
- "So long ago now, I entered Mutran's mind... and he mine... and so he learned how best to strike at Mata Nui. He and his kind have dared reach for power that fate chose to deny them. How... intriguing."
- "It's more than that. Tell him, Spiriah – tell him what will happen to him if the Makuta succeed in their plans."
- "If the Plan succeeds... A shadow will fall... Makuta will rule the universe, their will enforced by Rahkshi. Anyone with the power to threaten that rule will die... and that means anyone."
- — Tren Krom, Brutaka, and Spiriah, Federation of Fear
- "Makuta! I know what you're planning. You won't get away with it."
- "You know? If you knew, you would be fleeing in panic, Toa. No, you suspect ... just as Zaktan does."
- — Helryx and Teridax, Dwellers In Darkness
Trivia
- Teridax's Plan was so vast and complex that no Makuta other than Teridax knew the full extent of it.
- Teridax's Plan spanned many millennia, involving several teams of Toa including the Toa Metru, Toa Mahri and Toa Nuva, and events such as the Great Cataclysm, and relied on precise timing. There have been elements Teridax did not anticipate, however. The rescue of the Metru Nui Matoran was an unfortunate setback, as was Teridax's armor being smashed by the door to Metru Nui, and being transformed into Takutanuva.
