The Toa Mata landed on the tropical island of Mata Nui, having traveled across the ocean in canisters. Each canister washed ashore on different beaches around the island, where they emerged and assembled themselves.

Kopaka, Toa of Ice, was exploring Ko-Wahi when he spotted Matoro, spying on him. After a brief chase, Kopaka trapped the Matoran in an ice slide. The Toa asked him questions about his mission, and why he was sent to the island. They were both attacked by a Nui-Rama, and Kopaka managed to save Matoro from falling off a cliff. Then Matoro took Kopaka to Turaga Nuju, who told the Toa about the various Kanohi masks hidden around the island.

Tahu, Toa of Fire, was walking in the charred forest in Ta-Wahi, and encountered the Ta-Koro Guard, led by Jala, (or Jaller as changed later, same pronunciation) who trapped him by mistake in a trap set for Rahi. The Ta-Matoran ran toward the cage, ready to attack. Tahu produced his fire sword, and slashed through the trap with ease. Turaga Vakama intervened and welcomed the Toa of Fire.

Elsewhere on the island, the Toa of Earth, Onua, stumbled upon an Onu-Matoran park where he met the Matoran Onepu. The Matoran brought Onua to Turaga Whenua, where he learned vital information about his purpose and mission.

Pohatu, Toa of Stone, arrived almost immediately at his village, which was located among the Po-Wahi cliffs. There he learned from Turaga Onewa why he was needed on the island.

Lewa, Toa of Air, flew to his village in the treetops of Le-Wahi, where he met Turaga Matau.

After being sent on his way by Turaga Onewa, Pohatu used his mask power and found himself in the icy region of Ko-Koro. There Pohatu and Kopaka met, and were attacked by a Kane-Ra, but they managed to defeat the Rahi. Later, Kopaka found his first Kanohi, the Hau, Mask of Shielding. Kopaka's sharp eyes spotted four beings similar to them, gathered just below whee they were standing.

The Toa called a meeting on the cliffs of Mount Ihu, where they talked and got to know one another, discussing their powers and what they had done. However, they soon drifted from the close past to the near future, familiarizing one another with what they had learned about Teridax, the Rahi and the villages. The Turaga had told them that they needed to find the Kanohi Masks, objects of great power, to defeat Teridax. Although Tahu and Onua wanted to stay together, they split apart; even Gali was too distracted to argue, for only she hadn't visited her own village yet.

Tahu went to Onu-Wahi to search for masks and found the Kanohi Akaku in a cave. He had to deliver a battle for it against a Nui-Jaga.

Lewa later rescued Gali from a Rahi attack. Soon after, he left to collect his remaining masks, While Gali returned to the waters in search of her village. Suddenly, she found herself under attack by a Tarakava. Gali managed to trap the Rahi in a sea cave.

Elsewhere, Lewa had plunged underwater to retrieve his Mask of Speed. He defeated a Nui-Jaga blocking the entrance but was almost drowned by plants. However, he succeeded in retrieving the Kakama.

Meanwhile, Gali was colletcing her Miru, when the mountain crumbled, She them found herself having to fight two Nui-Jaga and two Tarakava. In Le-Wahi, a Nui-Rama knocked off Lewa's mask and he fell into the jaws of a powerful Muaka tiger. Onua rescued Lewa, but the Toa of Air was defeated and captured. Lewa was given an Infected Kanohi. Gali, outnumbered by Rahi, was rescued by Tahu, but was hit by a Tarakava and vanished beneath the waves were she had a vision of the Toa Kaita, Akamai, and Wairuha.

Kopaka recovered his Pakari from a lake of lava. He was almost killed when Lewa saved him, and told him that Onua had called the Toa together for a meeting. The meeting was first interrupted by the eruption of the Mangai Volcano, and then more Rahi attacks. Onua and Pohatu combined their powers to dig a trench for the lava, so that no harm would come to the island. After the Toa had won the first battle, they decided the search for the masks had to continue, and they agreed that they fought better as a team. And after another fight with the Rahi, Gali, Onua and Kopaka recovered Tahu's Miru underwater. Working together, they collected all their masks, and headed for the legendary Kini-Nui.

There they placed their Kanohi on their statues, which were carved into the Kini-Nui. Eack Toa's set of masks combined to form a Golden Kanohi. These Kanohi contained all of the powers of the six Great Masks. As each Golden Mask formed, they each received a Makoki Stone, a small piece of a circular rock fragment needed to open the pathway to Mangaia, Teridax's lair. They stayed at the Kini-Nui for a final gathering before going down to defeat Teridax. There they discussed their battle plans, and whether or not they would return, for Teridax would almost certainly send all of his Rahi to attack the Kini-Nui. After the unexpected arrival of the Chronicler and his company, they went down, knowing that seven Matoran were protecting the entrance.

Upon entering the gate to Mangaia, the six Toa fused into the two Toa Kaita. Akamai was the combination of Tahu, Pohatu and Onua, while Wairuha was the combination of Lewa, Gali and Kopaka. They represented Valor and Wisdom respectively. As each took a different path, both of them encountered a new menace-- the Manas crabs.

As each fought them, the overwhelmingly powerful creatures attacked them in groups, moving too fast for the Toa Kaita to effectively attack or block them. Luckily, both rejoined and together they were able to hold their attack. Still, the Manas were continuously coming, and the Toa Kaita needed a way to stop them. Soon enough, they found a way. Strange towers outlined the landscape, and as each Toa Kaita sliced one, sparks flew and one of the Manas shut down. Despite the Manas' attempts to guard the towers that mysteriously gave them life, the Toa Kaita continued to destroy the structures. The Rahi were defeated and the Toa Kaita moved on.

Meanwhile the Chronicler's Company was overwhelmed by a massive Rahi attack. Retreating to the Kini-Nui, and almost defeated they were saved just in time by the Ussalry, the Ta-Koro Guard and the Le-Koro Gukko force.

The Toa finally found themselves in the realm of their ultimate enemy, the Makuta. Upon entering the room, a force of destruction separated the Toa Kaita, thus they became the Toa Mata once again. When the Toa entered the main chamber, the first thing they saw was nothingness, a huge void that seemed to fill the chamber. Suddenly Teridax's voice boomed into the chamber, taunting and ridiculing the Toa. When the voice silenced, six shadow forms appeared in front of the Toa, each matching one of the Toa's shapes. Jumping into combat, the Toa battled the Shadow Toa. As the heroes fought an extremely even match, they were almost defeated. When the Toa realized no one could defeat their own shadow counterpart, they acknowledged shadow was a part of them. In doing so the Toa were able to re-absorb their counterparts, thus ending their threat. Afterwards the Toa proceeded into Makuta's lair.

When the Toa entered the chamber they looked up into a column in the middle of the room, a swirling vortex of objects, and called out to Teridax, saying that they were ready. Suddenly Teridax showed himself. The Toa were stunned, staring at a small being walking up toward them. A Matoran, completely pitted and rusted with an Infected Mask, walked out to them, blank eyes staring from empty sockets, and proclaiming that he was what they were sworn to protect.

Kopaka warned Tahu it was a trick, and after several comments were exchanged, the Matoran revealed himself to be Makuta. When his body was absorbed by the vortex, in its place, a dark energy swarmed, and the Infected Mask rose high as energy swirled around the Toa reaching out to them. Suddenly the tentacles of energy and darkness swarmed over the Toa, knocking them down. Nothing the Toa did at the moment worked, no matter how hard they tried to evade the attack of the Master of Shadow's tentacles of darkness. In the end, all Toa were knocked to the ground. Slowly, the Makuta ceased his attack and gazed down at his tired and defeated opponents, laughing at his foes. In a final attempt, the Toa blasted the swirling vortex of nothingness, with all of the elemental energy they could muster. Instantly, the swirling vortex of objects withered and collapsed, and the infected mask disappeared into the darkness, but not before warning the Toa that they could not destroy him, for he was nothing.

Pillars of white energy flowed down from the blackness above, and engulfed the Toa, transporting them back to the surface. It was the end of Teridax's terrible reign, or so it seemed. But by defeating or delaying him, the beginning of another period of terror for the villagers of Mata Nui began: the Bohrok Swarms.

Takua's Journey

Matoran Takua.
Matoran Takua.

When Takua was thrown into the air by an impact of an energy blast of the Toa Stones, he was wiped of all memory, including his name, and landed on the Ta-Wahi Beach. When Takua awoke, he saw a canister on the beach, the Toa Canister of Tahu. As he got up, Takua spotted a figure in the distance-- a blue Ga-Matoran. She was standing near the beach line near a boat. As Takua walked in her direction, he saw it was Maku (now known as Macku, same pronunciation) of Ga-Koro. She wanted to find Gali, for her village was in deep trouble from a recent Tarakava attack.

While Maku searched for Gali on foot, Takua sailed by boat to Ga-Koro. Takua entered the village, passing through a gate which was especially designed to keep Rahi out. The village of Ga-Koro was desolated and abandoned. It seemed the villagers had vanished from the area. While he investigated the village he found smoldering huts, wrecked flotation pads and broken tools. Upon entering a hut, he found a Lightstone on the floor. He also found a pump mechanism that was attached to a sealed flotation pad underwater. It had been sabatoged by a Rahi, and caused a hut to sink. Takua plunged into the water through a hole in one of the nearby huts. Underwater, he found Nokama, the Turaga of Ga-Koro and some Ga-Matoran trapped in the sunken hut. With guidance from Nokama, Takua found a small gear stuck to the bottom of some coral. He then resurfaced and pushed the gear back into it's proper slot in the machine. The pump sprang to life, and the sunken hut and lily pad with the villagers floated back to the surface.

The release of the Turaga and Matoran had attracted a Tarakava lizard. Bursting from the waters, it loomed over the group, angry that its prey had been freed. The Rahi was about to strike... when Gali arrived. The Toa of Water bravely fought the Tarakava and flipped onto its back. In an attempt to grab her, the Tarakava pulled both itself and Gali into the waters. The villagers held their breath, and after a while, Gali emerged victorious, with an infected mask in her hook.

Shortly after, Takua spoke to Turaga Nokama and the Astrologer and was thanked for his act of bravery. Takua later discovered that the boat harbor had been repaired. He took a boat back to Ta-Wahi, where he first inspected the Great Telescope. Afterwards he went to Ta-Koro where he spoke to Jala and Turaga Vakama, who told him about Tahu's arrival. During his time in the village he was given a lavaboard by a Ta-Matoran. After tranversing the Charred Forest and speaking to Kapura, he sailed back to Ga-Koro.

There he requested a trip to Po-Koro. After crossing the vast desert, he reached the village of Po-Koro. Takua discovered that there was a sickness going around, and the cause was unknown. Exploring the village, Takua found a mysterious Kolhii ball and brought it to Turaga Onewa. Afterwards Takua investigated the bazaar stand that sold them. There he found a mysterious key laying beside the balls. Takua took the key to a quarry with massive statues of the Toa's heads. After finding the correct hole he put the key into the slot that opened the door, and walked down the stairs. Entering a cave, Takua found a collection of Kollhi balls, with an infected mask that had been contaminating the Comets. Takua saw that a Nui-Jaga was guarding the balls and mask. Fortunately, Pohatu arrived at the cave, but was blinded by an attack of the Nui-Jaga. Takua guided Pohatu's kicks of the Kolhii balls to try to collapse the nest. They did so successfully and made it out of the cave just before it collapsed.

When Pohatu left and thanked him for his help, Takua returned to Po-Koro and was given a chisel by Turaga Onewa.

By showing the item to Turaga Nokama in Ga-Koro, he was given the post of Chronicler and the Book of Chronicles. Returning back to the desert, Takua took an alternate path which lead to Onu-Wahi. There Takua took Pewku, an Ussal Crab, at advice of Midak who brought him to Onu-Koro. Upon entering Turaga Whenua's hut he witnessed the progress of a meeting about Onu-Koro's problems. While exploring a tunnel that split into a small Lightstone mine, he saw that it was filled with lava from a split lava pipe. But the pipe key was across the lava. Finding way to get past, Takua crossed the lava with his Lavaboard and figured out a small, coded puzzle on the pipe machine that allowed the lava to stop flowing and the remaining lava to cool. After receiving thanks from the Onu-Matoran workers and crew and talking to Turaga Whenua, he continued on.

In the Great Mine Onu-Koro workers were experiencing trouble mining, as they had reached a layer of something extremely hard. Takua decided to go check it out. He soon came to meet the Chief Mining Prospector and found out that the layer of hard rock had a sundial on it. The Mine Prospector asked Takua if he knew an Astrologer, and he replied yes, the one from Ga-Koro. Upon hearing this news, the Prospector gave Takua a letter for the Astrologer. So Takua ventured to Ga-Koro, where the Astrologer, Nixie saw the letter and gave Takua a gnomon, which was a small object that went into the sundial. The Astrologer told Takua to use the Lightstone to imitate 4:00 with the Gnomon.

Takua ventured back to Onu-Koro, and used the Gnomon with Lightstone he had gotten from the mines to replicate 4:00. Suddenly, the sundial and plate started to move down slightly as it formed a round staircase that led downward. Takua followed it, and at the bottom of the pit he found a shimmering replica of a Golden Hau, with the word Rahi spinning emblazoned above it. Takua did not know what it meant, and left, keeping the area in mind in case he ever got a clue to it's significance.

He took another split path labeled Le-Wahi. The tunnel was full of Matoran laboring to finish the tunnel to Le-Wahi. Takua spoke to a miner who dreamed of going around Le-Wahi, longing to see the sights. The miner, Taipu, taught Takua a bit more about Onu-Matoran mining and the Toa named Onua. Just when Taipu lifted his hammer and brought it hard upon the wall, beams of sunlight shot through. They had finished the tunnel. Taipu wanted to go to Le-Koro with Takua, and Takua approved. The two were soon trekking through the jungle of Le-Wahi.

But as Taipu jumped up on a rock to see the village of Le-Koro, a Nui-Rama with an infected mask grabbed Taipu and carried him away. Worried, Takua continued on to the treetop village of Le-Koro and found it seemingly deserted. Takua found a flute and began playing on it. Suddenly Le-Matoran began to appear from the bushes and vines.

However, soon after Takua spoke to the Matoran, a thick, dark cloud of Nui-Rama began to form in the North. The Le-Matoran started to fend them off riding on their Gukko Birds. So Kongu and Takua took flight on a Gukko Bird to save the captured Le-Matoran and Turaga Matau. Using Bamboo Disks, Takua helped by hitting several Nui-Rama on their way. Getting past most of the Nui-Rama, the two soon entered the nest, only to be trapped with the rest. There, Matau told Takua that their Toa, Lewa, the Spirit of Air, had been taken by Teridax's infection.

From above approached a figure: Toa Lewa on a Nui-Kopen holding his Kanohi Mask. His empty, infected eyes stared blankly out at the hive. Suddenly, a tremor shook the nest and Toa Onua emerged from a hole. Lewa flung himself downward and the two engaged in fierce combat. Throwing each other off the walls, Onua managed to knock the infected mask off using his Matatu, thus halting Teridax's control over Toa Lewa. Onua then used his Matatu to get Lewa's Kanohi from the Nui-Kopen. Retrieving his mask, Lewa activated his Komau to control the Nui-Kopen so it could help bring some of the Matoran back to Le-Koro. When they arrived, the Matoran held a large celebration. During it, Takua spoke to Turaga Matau and was given a flutesong so that he could call upon a Kewa, or Kahu bird, from anywhere to fly him to other villages.

Afterwards Takua returned to Ta-Koro, just North of Le-Wahi. There, he spoke with Jaller, and received an ensign of the Guard, upon becoming a Guard, so that he could check up on the North March and the Ta-Koro scouts there. Takua walked up the side of Ta-Wahi, and used the Ta-Matoran cable car to reach Ko-Wahi. He found himself at the Drifts, a cold and desolate landscape of Ko-Wahi. There, he found an empty Ta-Matoran outpost, and took a Heatstone present there. He then proceeded back into the drifts. In it, Takua found an odd sight; a Ko-Matoran was stuck in ice. Using the Heatstone, Takua thawed him out. The Ko-Matoran quickly recovered and stared at Takua for a second, and then ran through the drifts. Takua was quick to follow and soon they stopped at an ice cave. There, he discovered that the Matoran's name was Kopeke and that the scouts had been lured into the Ice. Behind the cave Takua found a path to Ko-Koro.

Arriving at Ko-Koro, he walked into the Sanctum, or the Wall of Prophecies, and tried to speak with the Turaga of Ko-Koro, Turaga Nuju. However, all he heard were clicks and whistles. A Ko-Matoran told Takua that he would have to find Matoro, who was the only Matoran who could translate Nuju's speech. But he was out in the Drifts hunting, so Takua decided to leave. Going through a passage, he found himself in the drifts once again. From there, he followed red flags to try and find Matoro. Doing so, he came across a rock on which three words were inscribed: "Beware the Swarm." In front of it, Takua fell unconscious.

Later, Matoro found Takua on his way back and brought him into a cave. Right after Takua woke up, a low growl was heard, and Matoro witnessed a battle between Kopaka and a Muaka. Kopaka and Matoro then brought Takua back to Ko-Koro. He then went to Nuju and, with the help of Matoro, conversed. Nuju gave him a tablet to show to the other Turaga so that they could make preparations. Nuju aslo gave him the task of forming a Company of Matoran from each village to protect the Kini-Nui while the Toa went down into Teridax's lair.

Takua then traveled across Mata Nui to deliver the tablet to the Turaga. Afterwards he gathered the Matoran he had come across: Kapura of Ta-Koro, Tamaru of Le-Koro, Kopeke of Ko-Koro, Maku of Ga-Koro, Hafu of Po-Koro and Taipu of Onu-Koro. Together, they traveled to the Kini-Nui. When they arrived, the Toa were in a meeting, and were worried that if they were to defeat Teridax and come back, Rahi of all kinds would be there. When the Company arrived, the Toa's concerns were no more. The Company promised to protect the Kini-Nui and make sure no Rahi were to attack the Toa when they came out. But before they left, Gali stopped Takua and established a mental link with him so he could Chronicle the battle against Teridax if the Toa could not come back to tell the tale.

As the Toa descended, the Matoran waited. But they did not have to wait long. Soon, a horde of Rahi arrived. The Matoran used their discs to fend off the Rahi, and between the fights, Takua witnessed the formation of the Toa Kaita and their battles with the Manas. Suddenly, a massive group of Rahi of all types approached the Kini-Nui. When all seemed lost, an army of Ta-Matoran appeared in the North and flung a wave of discs at the Rahi. Gukko birds swooped down and attacked, and Ussal-riding Onu-Matoran began to erupt from the earth, ambushing the Rahi. The Kini-Nui was safe, now, and the Rahi were defeated and retreated.

When Takua got a message from Gali, calling him to witness the final battle with Teridax because when they entered Mangaia the link would be broken. Takau learned from the Matoran who had helped to defend the Kini Nui, that Turaga Whenua summoned him. He took Pewku back to Onu-Koro and told Takua that there was another passage to Mangaia. Through the mysterious Sundial area Takua had found earlier. Takua thanked Turaga Whenua and then proceeded downward. He reached the area, and to his surprise the Golden Hau that had been floating above it was gone. He touched the pillar, and with a sudden plunge the platform began to descend. It soon reached the bottom of a dark chamber, where Takua discovered disabled Manas scattered around the chamber. When he approached a tall, glowing green, open door he went through. Peeking from behind a wall, he saw the entire battle between the Toa and the Makuta. When Makuta was defeated, and as the Toa were transported upward, the pieces floating in the void came down upon Takua. He managed to get out, sought a way out. He entered another chamber which door opened.

Finding inside there was a large circular chamber, a semi-sphere of giant proportions with several weird circles that were glowing a sickly green. Takua gingerly approached one, and stared into it. A shape was in there, suddenly it burst a couple of bios away. Takua stared into the darkness, trying to see what had just burst, but could only see the vague shape of red eyes. Takua began to run away, and as he did, more of the pods began to burst. He soon approached a small, tan pole with an indent in it. He looked back to see more red eyes approaching, and then he started searching through his backpack. When he came across the Po-Matoran chisel, he stared at the shape and then slammed it into the indent. Instantly, a bubble formed around him, which went up and away, through a small tunnel in the ceiling. It ejected him onto the sands of the beach of Ta-Wahi.

Vakama was waiting on the beach, and as Takua approached, Vakama gave a short speech to Takua, speaking of how Takua had proven himself. And as they walked back to Ta-Koro, the Red Star glowed all the more brightly.
