Phantoka

The Phantoka

Phantoka was an umbrella name used to describe the three Toa Nuva, Toa Ignika and five Makuta that fought in the skies around the Stalactite Villages during the Karda Nui assault. In the Matoran language, "Phantoka" means "spirits of the air". The name was given to them collectively by the local Av-Matoran who likened their airborne movements to spirits, despite the fact that the Toa and Makuta were actually foes.

When the seven Makuta invaded Karda Nui, three went into the Swamp of Secrets while the remaining four - Vamprah, Antroz, Chirox and Mutran - remained in the Stalactite Villages, converting Av-Matoran into Shadow Matoran, continuing the manufacture of Shadow Leeches, and searching for the Keystones. During this time, the Phantoka Makuta took bat-like forms in order to frighten the Av-Matoran. Vamprah, Antroz and Chirox were present when Toa Mahri Matoro used the Kanohi Ignika and were subsequently blinded. To compensate, they chose three Shadow Matoran to join them and become their "eyes", via telepathy.

When the Toa Nuva arrived, they split up - Kopaka, Pohatu and Lewa stayed in the villages to protect the remaining Av-Matoran, the other three pursued the other Makuta into the swamp. Whilst in the skies, the Toa's armor adapted to allow them to fly. With the help of some of the Matoran, they fought the Makuta a number of times, who were eventually reinforced by the arrival of Makuta Icarax. The Toa, however, also eventually gained help in the form of Toa Ignika; the Mask of Life with a newly formed body.

After several battles, the Phantoka joined their comrades - the Mistika - in the swamp, though continued to be referred to as spirits of the air. During this time, the Phantoka Toa Nuva obtained vehicles causing their armor to once again adapt, this time into vehicle mode. Kopaka's vehicle was shortly commandeered by Makuta Antroz who during this time shapeshifted into a second form and used the Jetrax T6 to see.

Eventually, the body of Mata Nui awoke when Toa Ignika sacrificed his body and the Toa escaped Karda Nui while the remaining Makuta were incinerated by the Energy Storms, causing the name Phantoka to fall into disuse.

Mistika

The Mistika

Mistika was a term for the three Makuta, three Toa Nuva and Takanuva who were in the Swamp of Secrets. Alhough seen very little by them, the Av-Matoran gave them the umbrella name "Mistika", a Matoran word meaning "spirits of the mist." Even though both Makuta and Toa were considered Mistika, they were enemies rather than allies.

History

Makuta Gorast, Krika and Bitil went into the swamp of Karda Nui in order to locate the respective Keystones and the Codrex while the other invading Makuta also searched for Keystones and performed other duties. The mutagenic swamp waters eventually affected the Brotherhood members in several severe ways: locking them into their insectoid forms, restricting their use of Kraata Powers, and also giving each a unique mutation.

When Toa Nuva Tahu, Gali and Onua arrived, they too set about searching for the Keystones, so as to gain access to the Codrex. They fought the Makuta on a number of occasions, and once in possession of all their respective Keystones, they were joined by a newly arrived Toa Takanuva and their Phantoka allies, who also had their Keystones. After one more battle with all eight Makuta, the Toa eventually entered the Codrex, and the Phantoka claimed the three vehicles found there.

The final battle concluded when Mata Nui was awoken. The Toa escaped Karda Nui with the Av-Matoran and the now-cured Shadow Matoran, and the remaining Makuta were destroyed by the storms, causing the name Mistika to fall into disuse.
