The Northern Continent is a large land mass situated slightly south of Metru Nui and Karzahni.
History
After the Matoran Civil War, the leader of the Brotherhood of Makuta, Makuta Miserix, assigned Makuta to various locations around the universe. Due to its sheer size, the Northern Continent was assigned several Makuta to oversee different regions. Makuta Krika was assigned to the northern region of the Continent. Makuta Gorast was given the Tren Krom Peninsula, aptly named after the legendary entity, Tren Krom.
At some point in time, the Le-Matoran Nidhiki, a resident of the Tren Krom Peninsula, became a Toa. He later left for Metru Nui to join the Toa Mangai.
During The Dark Time, the continent was invaded by Icarax and his army of Manas crabs. Icarax managed to conquer several of the settlements before being stopped and defeated by Teridax. The latter left the continent, and Icarax withdrew his contingent of Manas.
Around five years prior to the invasion of Karda Nui, the Ta-Matoran Vultraz was confronted by the Ko-Matoran Mazeka after several crimes and the murder of Mazeka's mentor. The confrontation was not the first between the two, and that particular confrontation ended in the seeming death of Vultraz. Gorast saw a potential opportunity in Vultraz and rescued the Ta-Matoran. The Ko-Matoran was later contacted by a powerful organization and recruited into their ranks. Gorast later left her region to join the strike on Karda Nui.
A powerful artifact, the Heart of the Visorak, was kept in the Tren Krom Peninsula of the continent. Pohatu and Onua, seeking the Heart, traversed across the Northern Continent to the peninsula to retrieve it, as per their list of tasks.
Landscape
The Northern Continent is the largest northernmost land mass in the Matoran Universe. It is located somewhere south of Metru Nui, but mainly north of other landmasses. The continent contains many Matoran settlements. Although part of it was ravaged by Icarax's invasion, those zones have since been rebuilt.
Jutting out of the side of the continent is the Tren Krom Peninsula, a hazardous territory. There are large cliff faces lined with razor sharp spikes, acid falls, volcanic mountains, and dangerous Rahi. Despite the deadly environment, the peninsula is populated by a number of Matoran settlements, with several different types of Matoran tribes coexisting.

Matoran reside on the Northern Continent. They formerly included Mazeka, Krakua, Nidhiki, and Vultraz, along with a number of other De-Matoran who remain on the continent.
