Plot Summary
Prologue
A crimson, crystalline substance comes into view, embedded in which is a clawed hand pinned in front of a wing. Closer examination reveals a winged titan buried in the crystal. On his face the titan bears the Kanohi Kraahkan, the Great Mask of Shadows. The crystal is the being's prison. From the shadows, a female voice softly whispers a name. Makuta.
A four-fingered ebon-clad hand digs into the prison, extracting a small shard, which falls below the cliff face to the dark depths below.
Synopsis
The Silver Sea is in an uproar; a massive storm has encompassed the entire horizon. Through the tumultuous waves, a lone vessel, a Vahki Transport, is attempting to cross the sea. Time and time again, the craft almost capsizes. Its fortune turns bad as a massive tidal wave swells up before the craft, sinking it. As the skyline of Metru Nui comes into view, a red armored hand shoots out of the Protodermis, blindly grabbing for something to hold on to.
On the beach of Metru Nui, parts of the transport and debris from the city are scattered about. Suddenly one of the piles shifts, and with a great heave, Onewa, Toa of Stone, emerges from the rubble. Before he can get free of the pile, he is surprised by Nuju, Toa of Ice. Nuju quickly blames the disastrous voyage on Matau. From under another debris pile, the Toa of Air's head appears, and he quickly shifts blame of the trip on Vakama, stating he was only following orders. From the waters of the Silver Sea, Nokama, Toa of Water, emerges, chiding Matau and saying they made it, regardless of how. Backing down, Matau suddenly realizes he is still buried under debris, and asks for assistance. Debris goes flying as Whenua, Toa of Earth, uses his Earthshock Drills to quickly free Matau. After a quick thanks to Whenua by Matau, Vakama, Toa of Fire, the leader of the Toa Metru appears from the ruined city, calling his comrades forward to their duty.
As the Toa walk through the ruined streets of their beloved city, they notice webbing that covers many buildings, and the cry of Rahi in the night. The Toa stop and see a herd of Kikanalo pass through the street in front of them. Rahi fliers narrowly miss the Toa, and Kraata slither across the street. Matau makes a sarcastic remark, and Whenua voices his fear that the Archives may have been breached, unfortunate as it contained many specimens of dangerous Rahi. Upon Vakama's inquiry, Whenua informs the others that the webs around the city are caused by Visorak. Despite this, Vakama believes that it will not be hard to rescue the Matoran, despite Whenua and Nuju's doubts. Calling his teammates forward again, Vakama proceeds onwards, when suddenly, he is struck by a flying wheel of green energy, paralyzing him. The other Toa quickly suffer the same fate. Off-balance when he was struck, Whenua topples into the other Toa, sending them all into a heap. After a quick argument between Matau and Vakama, a loud cry startles the Toa. From the end of the street a squad of Visorak Keelerak emerge from the shadows, striking fear into the hearts of the heroes.
A lone Keelerak walks along one the webbing skyways that leads to the Coliseum where it marches through a massive storage facility bearing Matoran Spheres along the wall and littered about on the floor, heading straight to Turaga Dume's chambers. It stops in front of a polished stone dais bearing a large throne, bowing before it. The throne atop the dais slowly turns, revealing its occupant to not be Dume, but Sidorak, the king of the Visorak Horde. Sidorak demands a report. The spider on the floor eagerly chitters, reporting that Toa have been spotted in Metru Nui. Sidorak correctly hypothesizes that they have returned to try and get the Matoran which he claims as his. When asked if the Toa had already been captured, the Visorak nods and leads his leader away to one of the balconies jutting out from the side of the Coliseum.
Outside, several Visorak watch the newest cocoons to be added to the web as the Toa struggle to get free. Sidorak arrives and watches the Toa briefly, but then orders the Toa to be dropped. Before the Keelerak at his side can leave to carry out the orders, it is stopped by Roodaka, viceroy of the Visorak hordes. She then asks Sidorak if the Toa's end should be so simple. Sidorak greets her as his queen, but Roodaka reminds him they were not yet married, an issue regarded a simple simple formality by Sidorak. Playing on Sidorak's pride, Roodaka elucidates that if Sidorak simply dropped the Toa, history would judge him as a poor leader. At her suggestion, Sidorak agrees to make the Toa's demise more "legendary". Roodaka then asks Sidorak for the bodies of the six dead Toa.
Below the scheming couple, the Toa helplessly hang in their cocoons. To the side, a pair of Visorak fight, a blue Boggarak and a red Vohtarak. The Vohtarak gains the upper hand and throws the Boggarak off the Coliseum to the amusement of the other Visorak and the worry of the Toa. Matau then blames Vakama for the Toa's capture, but Nokama's defends Vakama. Vakama turns and begins to apologize to his comrades, but the cocoon seals up and Vakama is gripped in pain. As the pain temporarily stops, Vakama notice an odd limb emerging from the side, but ceases to examine it when the other Toa begin to cry out. In shock, Vakama watches as the cocoons mutate the Toa and then dissipate, dropping them to the ground far below. Vakama's foot catches a web and he leans up, painfully as the mutation fully takes hold, to apologize for his failure to Nokama. Nokama can only watch in fear as Vakama's foot breaks through the webbing and drops him. She shortly follows, her cocoon dissipating as well.
The Toa are unaware of six points of light in the distance. They grow larger until they slam into the Toa, cutting off their fall. Vakama examines himself as strange beings, having the face of a Rahkshi and the body of a Turaga, carry him and the other Toa to safety. When the being carrying him does not answer his inquiries, Vakama demands answers, calling himself a Toa. The being's response is to laugh and fly on.
Back at the Coliseum, Roodaka is speaking to a small crimson crystal shard, reassuring the Makuta from whose prison she cut it. She presses the shard into her armor above her heartlight, and walks away. Behind her, a larger piece of crystal, resembling the shard in shape, stands behind a Suva, casting a crimson glow into the dim light of the Suva.
Dawn breaks over Metru Nui and Matau awakens by a Protodermis fountain. Looking around for his comrades, but not finding them, he turns to the fountain, at the same time blaming Vakama. Coming to the edge of the fountain, Matau slips, falling in. When he recovers, he is shocked and horrified to discover his bestial appearance. Then he notices the other Toa and not recognizing them, wildly swings his weapon. Nokama stops him and attempts to calm Matau, stating that everything is all right now that the Toa are there, that they will find a way to reverse the mutation together, and Whenua quickly supports her. Matau then blames and angrily taunts Vakama, angering him. Nuju intervenes, reminding them it would be best to figure out why they have been transformed into their new forms, while Nokama agrees with him. As Matau is sceptical about this, a strange voice tells them to listen if they wish to return to their forms. The Toa look up to see one of the beings who saved them flying down and landing on a nearby statue.
Back at the Coliseum, Roodaka is again speaking to Makuta, this time through the giant crystal that is in the hidden chamber, relating the situation and her plan. At this point a Keelerak enters the chamber, to Roodaka's irritation. The creature then reports the Toa survived the fall. Roodaka asks how, and the Keelerak replies the Rahaga saved them.
Back at the fountain, the Toa are all in a circle, issuing a rapid stream of questions at the being who had appeared before them who replies by explaining about Keetongu, a Rahi that knows the cure to many venoms and the only creature that is able to stand against the Visorak. He tells them that they must find Keetongu if they are to be the heroes they once were. At Nokama's question, the unknown being replies that they were poisoned with Hordika Venom, and that if they do not purge it from their system, it will fully take hold of them, rendering them unable to return to their previous forms. Nuju asks the being if he was a Hordika, and the being introduces himself as Norik, a Rahaga. As his comrades descend into the camp, Norik introduces each of them: Gaaki, Bomonga, Kualus, Pouks, and Iruini. Nokama asks the Rahaga if they could take the Toa to Keetongu, a notion that Iruini laughs at. Noriks silences Iruini and states the Rahaga had been searching for Keetongu and many of them doubted his existence. Nuju asks Norik if he belives, and Norik claims he does. Nokama, heartened, states they must as well, but Matau quickly stands up and says they should talk about this, but directs the question to Vakama. Vakama is off to the side by a gas pipe the Toa had been using as a fire source, trying to ignite the flame of his weapon. He states they came to Metru Nui to rescue Matoran, not to go on a Rahi chase. Norik comes up to him and asks him how he would do this, pointing out he did not even know how to use his new Hordika powers, adding emphasis by blowing out the flame Vakama now held. Angered, Vakama hits the pipeline, sealing it and cutting off the fire. Ignoring Nokama's plea, he turns his back and stalks away.
Vakama is so absorbed by his rage that he never notices he is being stalked by a Muaka tiger. The Rahi strikes, and as Vakama prepares to retalliate, his Rhotuka launcher activates, the bright light and loud noise from which scares the Rahi off. Norik comes to Vakama, saying the Rahi was merely frightened. He notices Vakama is intent on performing the mission himself. As Norik speaks to Vakama about the Three Virtues, and the importance of Unity, Vakama is angered further, and tells Norik that he'll complete the mission himself. As Vakama runs off, Norik returns to the others, and tells them that Vakama needs some time alone. Cutting off all discussion about Vakama, Norik leads the remaining Toa and the Rahaga off to search for Keetongu.
Meanwhile, Vakama is ambushed by a Visorak. As he prepares to fire his Rhotuka at it, his spinner is knocked aside by another. Soon, he is surrounded by Visorak, captured, and imprisoned in the secret chamber. He begins to howl, and is shocked by it. As he questions what he has become, Roodaka strides in, and tries to offer him a "proposal", but Vakama declines the opportunity to hear it. As an act of trust, she reaches down and tears the webs away from Vakama, asking him what could be hurt by listening to her.
The Toa arrive at the Great Temple, but Matau expresses his doubts that it could help. After a brief comment from Onewa about Matau's current attitude, the Toa of Air begins to act like an ignorant fool. Norik abruptly cuts him off, saying they should go inside. The Toa and Rahaga walk away except for Onewa, who angrily raises a fist a Matau.
Roodaka and Vakama are walking along a balcony adjacent to the secret chamber. Roodaka tells Vakama that Sidorak does not know Vakama was captured, so he must not know they speak. Vakama calls Sidorak a poor leader, a statement Roodaka agrees with. Vakama asks Roodaka if she was worried that the squad of Baggarak behind them was going to report that to Sidorak, but she replies they were loyal to her. She then claims that because she was strong, they feared her and did not dare to question her. She goes on to tell Vakama that was how the other Toa should treat him. Vakama tries to reaffirm his faith in the other Toa, but Roodaka cuts him off, saying they will only hold Vakama back. She calls them unworthy of a leader like Vakama, and shows him Ta-Metru as a bribe to join the Horde.
The Rahaga are making their way across the walkway to the Great Temple, but Norik notices the Toa staying behind at the gates. When he asks what is wrong, Nokama replies that they should stay behind, being as the Temple was a sacred place and the Toa believed their presence in their current state would desecrate it. Norik concedes this point and asks them to guard the gates until morning while the Rahaga were at work. Nokama agrees, but Matau says they should talk about it. All the other Toa angrily disagree. Matau looks at Norik, who just shrugs and walks away.
At the Coliseum, Vakama states his longing toward Ta-Metru. Roodaka tempts him, saying that if he would lead the Visorak Horde, he could rule Ta-Metru. Vakama is skeptical of this. Roodaka, realizing he needs proof, orders the Boggarak squad to jump from the balcony. The spiders quickly obey, and Roodaka offers to teach Vakama this obedience and says there are six ways Sidorak would allow this. Convinced, Vakama turns and says he is listening. As he does so, he begins to growl and his eyes flash green.
At the Temple, Iruini is helping Gaaki translate a section of the wall. Gaaki hears a noise and is approached by Norik. Norik regards the noise as being from his approach, but Gaaki disagrees, saying it was a creature, although she did not know what. Norik looks at the translation and send Gaaki upstairs to gather the rest of the Rahaga and leave the Temple. When they Gaaki and Iruini leave, Norik begins searching for the infiltrator. After conversing with him, he realizes it is Vakama, though he cannot see him. Vakama informs him he has captured the other Rahaga, but Norik tells Vakama it was not too late, the other Toa needed him. Vakama is enraged by the previous statement and says she was right about him. He then tells Norik he has a message for the other Toa. When asked what the message is, Vakama drops down behind Norik, scares the Rahaga, and proceeds to lay waste to the Temple.
Confused by the absence of the Rahaga, the Toa move along the walkway to the Temple. Matau, fed up with his appearance and eager to find Keetongu, rushes ahead of the others, but stops short when he sees the Temple in flames. Brushing their grief aside, the Toa charge into the Temple to rescue the Rahaga. Unable to find them, Nuju uses the thermal imaging feature of his Kanohi Matatu's eyepiece and manages to find Norik buried under rubble. As the Toa move toward the pile, Whenua pushes them aside and uses his tool to free the Rahaga. Once free, Norik tells the Toa that Vakama was responsible for all of the damage, and falls unconscious.
Back at the Coliseum, Vakama is looking for Sidorak. He comes to a chamber and speaks to Sidorak over a comm system. Sidorak is confused as to why Vakama is there until Vakama presents him with the captured Rahaga and offers to join the Horde. Intrigued, Sidorak invites Vakama inside.
Norik recounts the full details of the night before, and Nokama exclaims Vakama would never do any of that. Norik tells her she is correct, but the Hordika Venom has changed Vakama. Nokama says they must find Keetongu before the Hordika overcomes them as well, but Norik cautions them, saying Vakama may already be too far gone for Keetongu to be of any help. Matau says they had to try and then blames himself for Vakama turning. When asked what would happen if they could not help, Matau says to leave the details to him. Nuju then turns the Toa's attention to finding Keetongu once more, and Noriks tells the Toa of the transcription the Rahaga had translated, that it said to follow a stream of tears. He points upward, and fromthe top of the Temple, a stream of liquid Protodermis is flowing down and across the walkway, which the Toa and Norik begin to follow.
At the Coliseum, Vakama sits in the arena box. Bound to one of the six ornamental pikes protruding from the front of the box, the captured Rahaga helplessly hang. Bomonga calls out to Vakama, calls him a Toa, but Vakama says that name no longer meant anything to him. Bomonga replies it once did and it could again. Roodaka appears and agrees that it could, but insinuates it would mean Vakama would once again be weak. Vakama stiffens at the notion. Roodaka calls Vakama behind her, saying it was time he had a glimpse of his future.
The Toa follow the trail of falling tears across the island of Metru Nui, constantly being imperiled by the Visorak horde. They come to Ko-Metru and the end of the stream. Sitting before them is a spiral pillar of frozen Protodermis. The Toa enter and come to a chamber with a pool of liquid Protodermis in the center. Matau says Keetongu is not there, but Norik calls him inside. Norik calls out in the chamber to Keetongu, stating the Toa required his help. Just as Matau is about to leave, the chamber begins to shake as the pool rolls and heaves. From the pool erupt great blocks of frozen Protodermis, perched upon which is the legendary Keetongu.
Vakama moves up the stone dais bearing the great throne. Roodaka urges him on, telling him to touch it. Sidorak enters, flanked by two Oohnorak and a Keelerak. He thanks Vakama for capturing the Rahaga, but Roodaka says that is only just the beginning. She presents Vakama to Sidorak to take away the day-to-day duties of commanding the Horde. Seeing Sidorak is hesitant, she also offers to have the rest of the Toa captured and trained like Vakama. After Roodaka offers all of the Toa as an engagement gift, Sidorak heartily agrees and gives command of the Horde to Vakama, with Sidorak maintaining absolute authority. Sidorak marches Vakama out to the arena box and shows Vakama the spectacle. Thousands of Visorak cover the floor. Eyes wide at the sheer mass of followers, Vakama issues a long howl, which the Visorak return. As the Visorak march through the gateways at the sides of the arenas, Roodaka tells Vakama to be ready, for many changes would soon come through the night.
At Keetongu's lair, the Toa have been relaying their story to Keetongu. Keetongu declines their plea to get Vakama back and return them to their normal forms, as they had to fight the scourge of the Visorak as they were and he could not start a battle on their behalf but he could aid them. However, he sees their quest as noble and offers them his help. The Toa issue a cry of Unity and Matau offers the Rahi to join in, which Keetongu accepts.
Sidorak, Roodaka, and Vakama are patiently awaiting the arival of the Toa. From the near-silence, the Coliseum begins to issue a reverberating bell-like tone. The noise is soone joined by a deep rumbling coming from one of the gateways adorning the arena wall. The gateway exploeds, sending visorak and stone flying. The Toa march through, brandishing their weapons. They stop in the middle of the arena, and Nokama calls out to Vakama. Roodaka looks at Vakama and remind him that he no longer needed the other Toa. Emboldened, he leaps to the tips of the ornamental spears and demands that the Toa pledge their allegieance to him. When the refuse, he rips one of the spears off of the box and throws it at the Toa. He then triggers the rest of the gateways, releasing the Visorak horde into the arena. The Toa wait in the middle of the arena and charge their Rhotuka. When the Visorak stop and begin to charge theirs, the Toa release and latch onto the Rhotuka with their tools and fly away to a statue on one end of the arena, with the exception of Matau, who flies out of the arena alltogether.
Sidorak is still perplexed by the thumping sound penetrating the building. Roodaka looks over to see a yellow Rahi climbing up the wall towards them. Vakama tells them it is Keetongu and offers to dispatch the Rahi, but Roodaka says no, Sidorak should. They march out of the box, but Roodaka tells Vakama to remain and wait. When they leave, Matau swings by on a piece of webbing, grab Vakama, and then drops with Vakama to a set of webs on the side of the Coliseum. After a brief argument, Vakama blasts Matau off of the side of the building with a shot from his Rhotuka launcher. Matau grabs a piece of webbing and climbs up after the Toa of Fire, who disappears over the ledge of a balcony.
From a loading dock, Roodaka and Sidorak engage Keetongu. Sidorak fires multiple blasts from his herding blade, but the climbing Rahi manages to dodge every one. Fed up, Roodaka fires a Shadow blast from her catcher claws. The blast strikes the Rahi, sending him plummeting from the building to the arena far below. Upon impact, the arena floor swells and surges, wiping out several Visorak. Sidorak proclaims the end of Keetongu, but Roodaka manipulates him into going to the arena to be sure. When they arrive at the crater, Keetongu awakens, and Roodaka abandons Sidorak. Sidorak pleads for his life before the angered Rahi, who just slams his powerful fists down upon Sidorak, crushing him. Roodaka only pauses to clutch the shard in her armor.
At the box, the Rahaga are struggling to get free of the bonds holding them to the spears. Suddenly, Norik appears, and uses his staff to fire energy blasts strong enough to free the Rahaga. They engage their flight packs and join the battle just in time to save Nokama from a Vohtarak by dropping a Roporak on top of it.
Matau warily walks across the balcony, until Vakama strikes from the shadows. Matau dodges. Soon a short battle erupts, ending with Vakama throwing Matau off the balcony. Before the Toa of fire can leave, though, the Toa of Air's hand appears on the ledge. Vakama steps on it and calls Matau weak. Matau takes the opportunity to apologize as Vakama is about to deliver the final blow. Sanity returns to Vakama when Matau mentions they had a Duty to perform. Vakama steps back, but Matau can no longer keep his grip, and falls towards the arena. Vakama wastes no time as he grabs a strand of webbing and dives off after him. He catches Matau in midair and they continue to ride the vine. Their faces come within centimeters of the arena floor as the web becomes taut and pulls them out of harm's way.
The Toa have fought valiantly against the Visorak, but the odds are against them as they are pinned down in the center of the arena. The Visorak close in, but then stop at the sound of a loud roar and back away. One of the gateways glows green, and then a large Rhotuka comes flying at them. It strike between all four Toa and their Rahaga allies, knocking them to the ground. From the gateway, Roodaka rides into the arena atop a large, golden-shelled Visorak. She steps off and notices one of the Toa is missing. At that moment, Vakama arrives and pushes Matau to ground in front of the other Toa. Roodaka thanks him, but before she can go about extracting their Elemental Powers, the five captured Toa strike at her with elementally charged Rhotuka. Roodaka laughs at the futility of the strike, and exclaims their atacks were useless as long as the Toa were not united, and since Vakama stood beside her, they could not win. Vakama then states he wanted to talk to her about that and engages his Rhotuka launcher, though he does not charge it. Roodaka then claims that is Vakama killed her, the Visorak would kill him and his friends. Vakama reminds her that Sidorak put him in charge of the Visorak, and he orders them to disperse. Vakama then states he will only lead those that choose to follow, and strikes her with an elementally charged spinner. As it approaches, the shard in her armor begins to absorb the energy coursing over her form. When Vakama's spinner strikes, Roodaka fals to the ground, and the shard in her armor releases the energy. From the shard a Shadow hand emerges and egulfs Roodaka, leaving only the shard from her armor. Norik realizes that shard was from the Makuta's prison, and since the shard was destroyed, so was his prison. Vakama replies it did not matter, because he was no longer afraid of Makuta.
Keetongu weakly comes up. Vakama helps him to his feet and tells him the Rahi owed the Toa nothing. However, Vakama asks the Rahi if he would change the Toa back. Keetongu asks why, and Vakama says it was their Destiny to be Toa and keep their promise to the Matoran. Keetongu consents and releases mass amounts of energy to cleanse the Toa.
The Toa begin loading Matoran Spheres into airships with the aid of Keetongu and the Rahaga. Once done, Vakama briefly onverses with Norik. He thanks him for his help. Norik tells Vakama because of him, Norik got to see a legend come true, and they now knew the Matoran were in very capable hands. Vakama smiles and boards the airship. Matau steps up to the controls, undocks from the Coliseum, and directs his and five other airships via umbilical teathers away, pausing long enough to give a final farewell to Norik and Keetongu. As the Toa approach the Great Barrier, Onewa spots what remains of Makuta's prison. Vakama states he will soon reveal himself to menace the Matoran once again. Nokama asks him what they will do when he does. Vakama replies the would find a way to defeat him. Matau directs the airships to a hole in the Barrier, piloting them to the light and island beyond the cliffs.
