Tales of the Tohunga is a game that Lego made in 2001 for GameBoy Advance. It was re-named Quest for the Toa after the Maori Lawsuit due to the Maori people's objection to The LEGO Group's use of the word "Tohunga."

Summary

The game stars Takua the Chronicler and his first known adventure on Mata Nui. It starts off where Takua is on a beach talking to Jala (later renamed Jaller due to Naming Day) and has been told that Turaga Whenua wanted to see him. Takua travels along the beach and reaches Onu-Koro. When he gets there, he discovers that Whenua and the Onu-Koro Toa Stone has been taken by Teridax's Infected Rahi. Takua saves Whenua and retrieves the Stone and is then told by Whenua that the other Turaga and their Toa Stones have been captured too. So Takua travels all over Mata Nui rescuing the Turaga, the Toa Stones, the Vuata Maca Crystals, and the Turaga's Staffs until he finds himself deep in the Mangai Volcano, the location of the final Toa Stone. In getting it, he accidentally falls into a tunnel in the volcano which he must lava surf out of. He escapes and ends up in Kini-Nui. There, the Turaga instruct him to place the Toa Stones into Kini-Nui. Takua does so and causes a beam of light to shoot out of the temple which sends Takua flying all the way to the beach of Ta-Wahi, gives him temporary amnesia, and summons the Toa Mata to the island.

After that, the events of the Mata Nui Online Game play out.

Story

In the time before time, the island of Mata Nui was a tropical paradise. Then a shadow fell across the land -- a shadow known as Makuta. In the dark years that followed, the islanders of Mata Nui put their faith in a legend that foresaw the arrival of six mighty heroes: the Toa. For only the Toa have the strength and courage to bring peace and light back to the world. As Mata Nui awaits the arrival of the Toa, a lone islander unknowingly begins a quest that will change Mata Nui forever.

Onu-Koro

In Onu-Koro, Takua began his quest with finding the Firestaff of Vakama. The locals feared for their Turaga, Whenua, because he was abducted by the Rahi whilst inspecting the Great Mine. Takua, obviously with doubts of his abilities, went into the mines that the Rahi lived in and rescued the Turaga from the Vatuka beast that had captured him. Whenua rewarded him with a Volo Lutu Launcher and asked the wanderer to seek out the missing Toa Onua Stone, and two Vuata Maca Crystals needed to heal the village's poisoned Vuata Maca tree. He successfully found the Stone in a blocked off cave and returned to the village, also with the Vuata Maca Crystals. He gave the Crystals to the village Tree Keeper and went to move on to another village. However Onepu, having heard of his bravery, challenged Takua to a game of Great Ussal Race. Takua won and left the village to go to Ga-Koro.

Ga-Koro

Emerging from the tunnels in an area along the coast, Takua took a treacherous journey through Ga-Wahi to reach the water village. After competing in a Ngalawa Boat Race to gain entry to Ga-Koro, Takua learned that Nokama too had been taken by a Rahi, and that the village Vuata Maca was poisoned. He set out across the small islands in the bay to find her, finding a Vuata Maca Crystal on the way. He soon came to the cave of the Makika toad that had taken the water Turaga, but discovered that the beast was immune to the Madu fruits he had been using as weapons. However, he was able to use a large stone to delay the creature for long enough to rescue Nokama. They returned to Ga-Koro and Takua then set out across the harbor to find the Toa Gali Stone and the remaining tree Crystal. He located the Crystal, and eventually the cliff side where the Stone had been hidden. He returned to the village briefly to hand in the Crystals before heading off to Po-Wahi.

Po-Koro

His quest now led him to Po-Koro, the village of Carvers. Near the Ga/Po-Wahi border, he found Whenua's Drill of Onua, which enabled him to get under a stone wall blocking his way. As he came close to the village, he encountered two Po-Matoran, one of whom, whose name was Podu, had become trapped underneath some stones. He helped them and soon arrived in Po-Koro. He found Onewa's Stone Hammer and set out to find the Turaga himself. After freeing a Matoran's Moa bird from a rock fall and collecting a tree Crystal on the way, he rescued Onewa from a swarm of burrowing insects. He then went to find the Toa Pohatu Stone, defeating a giant Kofo-Jaga using Whenua's drill to get it. Along with the second tree Crystal, he returned to the village and helped heal the Vuata Maca. After playing a game of Koli football, he headed towards Le-Wahi, for the next stage of his mission.

After competing in a game of Kewa Bird Riding to enter the village, Takua found Nuju's Ice Pick. He soon realized that Turaga Matau had been taken as well. He headed off to find where he could be, but was taken by a Goko-Kahu after collecting the two Vuata Maca Crystals. The bird failed to drop Takua into its nest, but the wanderer noticed that Matau was trapped in there with the bird's chicks. He was able to stun the babies by fooling their mother into dropping stones on them, and then got himself taken into the nest. He helped Matau out, and the Turaga rewarded him by giving Takua his Kau Kau Staff. After handing the Crystals to the Tree Keeper of Le-Koro, he went out to find the Toa Lewa Stone, armed with the knowledge that a strange mechanical tree may hold the answer. As he journeyed to find the tree, Takua came across four strange gears. When he found the mechanical tree, he realized that the gears fitted on to it. He placed them onto the device, which caused the tree to open. Taking the Toa Stone from inside, he returned to Le-Koro and crossed into Ko-Wahi.

Ko-Koro

After competing in Huai Snowball Sling to enter the village, Takua set off to find the missing Turaga Nuju, eventually finding the Turaga lost in the Wastes, along with a tree crystal. After finding him, the Turaga rewarded Takua with Nokama's Trident, but told him that the Toa Kopaka Stone was still missing, as well as the Element of Melting, a crystal that allowed the villagers to melt ice to obtain water. Takua set out, and after finding a tree Crystal and the Element, he came across three frozen crates. Curious, he smashed them open, only to discover that three large bird Rahi were inside. He defeated them, and found that they had the stolen Stone. He returned to Ko-Koro to give them the Element and Crystals, and then went on to Ta-Wahi.

Ta-Koro

Arriving in the village of fire, Takua met Turaga Vakama, who doubted the wanderer's ability. He gave him the task of finding an antidote to a poison that had been placed in the village's water supply, to prove himself. Before setting out, Takua took part in a game of Ignalu with a board Vakama also gave him. When he returned to the village, he discovered that Vakama had been taken by Rahi whilst he was gone. Takua went out into the lava plains to find the Turaga, and the Antidote. After discovering an Antidote, he found Vakama a prisoner of a group of Fire Mahi. He was able to defeat the Rahi herd, and obtained the key to Vakama's cage from them.

The freed Turaga and Takua returned to the village, where Vakama revealed that the Toa Tahu Stone would soon sink into the depths of the Mangai Volcano. Hurriedly, Takua ventured into the lava caves of the volcano, navigating through a maze riddled with dangerous Rahi. Recovering a Vuata Maca Crystal on the way, Takua eventually arrived at a cave, where he found the Toa Stone, and the second Crystal. He returned to the village with his finds, though still curious about a strange contraption in the Toa Stone cave.

Deciding to investigate further, he returned, and activated three switches embedded in the ground. This caused a large crystalline form to appear in the chamber. Puzzled by it, he placed a stone onto a small geyser, throwing it into the air. It came back down on top of the crystal, smashing it to pieces. Suddenly an eruption rocked through caverns, causing the floor beneath Takua to collapse.

He dropped down towards a lava river, but was able to land on his Lavaboard. Trapped in one place, he used his Volo Lutu to grab onto a Rahi fleeing the eruption and pull himself into the main river. Avoiding falling stones and lava currents he eventually burst out the the side of the Mangai. He flew through the air and landed at the Kini-Nui, where all six Turaga were waiting. They congratulated him on completing his quest and told him to replace the six Toa Stones onto the Amaja-Nui. As he placed them down, they began to glow with energy. When all six were in place, a huge beam of energy shot up from the sand pit, traveling far into the sky. Takua was caught in the beam which threw him high into the air above the island. He soon began to plummet downwards, and slammed into the beach near Ta-Koro. The impact robbed him of all his memories, leaving him with no recollection of his great quest, or how he had ended up lying in the sand...
