BIONICLE Heroes is a video game released by the LEGO Company, Travellers Tales and Eidos in 2006, featuring the Toa Inika, Piraka, and others.

The objective of the game is to defeat the Piraka and their "minions" in order to retrieve the Mask of Life. In the Playstation, Xbox 360, PC, Wii and Mobile versions, the player controls a Toa capable of changing into a different Toa Inika via collected Kanohi masks. The game is split into 7 areas, the first 6 are of individual Piraka and the final one of Vezon. There are 4 respective levels in the first 6 areas.

Along with defeating enemies, the player must destroy or create certain objects to obtain points.

Playstation, Xbox 360, Gamecube, Wii and PC Version

In this, more common version of the game, the player sees a short video of Jaller rushing out of his Toa Canister on Voya Nui, and meeting up with Balta (using Piruk's claws for hands), who tells him that the Piraka are terrorizing Voya Nui. The player watches as the Piraka scare many of the Matoran on Voya Nui, though their clumsiness also affects them, such as when Hakann gets kicked in the face by a Ta-Matoran while interrogating him.

After the introductory video, the player is then placed in a small area where they can be teleported to spots on Voya Nui where they help kill past enemies from 2002 - 2006. Once finished, they go underground to battle Vezon and Fenrakk, and, eventually, get the Mask of Life.

Matoran Enclave

The Matoran Enclave is the section of the game where you start out, the main "hub" of the game, and it is from here that you can access the zone select or "Voya Nui portal". You will end up here after a level. When you first start the game you end up in front of Balta's store looking at the portal, and the viewing chambers over that. Balta's shop offers things from tips, to Piraka playground items, to upgrades. Everything you need and more can be found here. One of the side goals in the game is to collect gold and silver canisters in a level. the silver ones will unlock one of the various types of enemies, which you can view in the tunnels over the portal tunnel. The tunnel on the far right are the sub-bosses in a large stone Visorak canister, which can be viewed in a cage. On your left is the Piraka playground. On the right you can access the trophy room, where you can view the information on the bosses, and sub-bosses you have defeated, and enemies you have defeated. That is straight ahead of you. On the left is information on the gold canister unlocked items, and on the right is the achievements wall.

Piraka Playground

This is an area where the defeated Piraka end up after being beaten. You can purchase mini movies at Balta's shop, which are the most humorous. Also, at the far side of the playground, you can find the three bonus levels (bought at a high price) which tests how many enemies you can defeat in two minutes: Kohrak, Vohtarak, and Vorzakh respectively. In order to activate the movies one must use Hewkii.

Along the way, the player can unlock new weapons and shielding for the Toa Inika, as well as items in the Piraka Playground section. The player can walk into a beach where the Piraka hang out and do things that the player unlocks. Also, by killing Piraka in-game, the player can then play as that Piraka, but only in their region. (For example, Avak can only be played in the "Avak's Stronghold" levels and before beating the game) They can also play as Vezon, after they beat the game, which replaces the Piraka as characters; the Piraka can then only be viewed at the Piraka Playground.

Weapons

The 6 Toa each have a weapon. This weapon can be upgraded twice. The Toa start out with the Toa Mata's Toa Tools, which get upgraded to the Toa Metru's, and finally the Toa Inika's.

Stonesmash: Hewkii's weapons. Quite powerful and the slowest of all the weapons, these function like rocket launchers. When shooting, Hewkii will experience recoil and be pushed back.

Earthburst: Nuparu's weapons. The most powerful of all weapons and moderately slow, these function like grenade launchers.

Watershock: Hahli's weapons. Rather weak and fast, these function like beams of water.

Icecrack: Matoro's weapons. Quite strong and slow, these function like sniping guns.

Fireblast: Jaller's weapons. Quite weak and very fast, these function like machine guns.

Airshot: Kongu's weapons. Strength varies with distance. Rather slow, these function like shotguns.

Abilities

  • Hewkii: Hewkii can assemble normal constractions. After being upgraded, Hewkii can collapse certain walls with his Fragmentation ability. He is one of the slowest Toa.
  • Nuparu: Nuparu has the ability to climb up certain walls and cliff faces. He can also be upgraded, and once that has been done, he can dig up treasures using his Excavate ability. Nuparu is the slowest Toa.
  • Hahli: Hahli can cross rivers and streams. Once she has been upgraded, she can use her Drench ability to open secret rooms. She is faster in water than on land.
  • Matoro: Matoro can use his weapons to zoom in and snipe white targets that can only be destroyed from a distance, or hit enemies in zoom mode for twice the damage. After being upgraded, Matoro can create ice bridges with his Freeze ability in certain places to create pathways. Matoro is very slow.
  • Jaller: Jaller can walk over lava. Once upgraded, he can use his Torch ability to burn down vines that block the player's path. He is the fastest Toa.
  • Kongu: Kongu can leap certain gaps that are marked by green landing pads. Once upgraded, he can use his Gust ability to open secret areas. He is the second fastest Toa.
  • Piraka: All of the Piraka can assemble the Piraka constractions within their respective zones.
  • Vezon: Vezon can assemble black constractions as well as Piraka constractions.

Zones

  • Vezok's Coastline: The first Zone of the game, in this zone Vezok is unlocked. The levels are Piraka Bluff, Smuggler's Cove, Shattered Wreck, and Vezok's Deluge.
  • Avak's Stronghold: In this zone, Avak can be unlocked. The levels are Decrepit Dungeons, Cleansing Plant, Menacing Keep, and Avak's Dynamo.
  • Thok's Mountain: Thok is unlocked in this zone. The levels are Flooded Lowlands, Mountain Path, Blizzard Peaks, and Thok's Grotto.

  • Zaktan's Jungle: This zone unlocks Zaktan. The levels are Logging Post, Ancient Forest, Forgotten Shrine, and Zaktan's Chamber.
  • Vezon's Awakening: The final "zone" of the game, this is more of a level than a Zone. In this zone, Vezon is unlocked and the final movie plays after completing it if 100% has been achieved for the game.

  • Bohrok - The weakest enemies, Bohrok fly or roll around and shoot at the Toa. Shots vary in strength and visual depending on type.
  • Visorak - The second weakest enemies, Visorak come down from webs and launch Rhotuka at the Toa, or various attacks depending on the breed.
  • Vahki - The strongest enemies, Vahki can shoot at or smash the Toa. The tougher three types must be defeated twice, with the second time at only half strength (or a standard enemy's strength).

DS Version

The DS version of BIONICLE Heroes is somewhat different than the console versions. It is viewed from a first-person perspective, shown on the top screen, while the view is mainly controlled by the touchscreen. The Toa Mata, Metru, and Inika masks are found on the first, third, and Piraka levels of each zone, respectively. The Mata masks give the user a new weapon, the Metru masks enhance that weapons' performance, and the Inika masks increase the weapon's power and give the user a new ability. The player also has a Silver Toa which wields a Zamor Sphere Launcher, and can build "Constractions" (short for Construction and Action). Unlike the console version, Hero mode is not required to build any Constractions.

This version of BIONICLE Heroes has a four-player Multiplayer mode in which each of the players play as the Piraka. Masks are gathered to give the player the same weapons that appear in Single Player mode. Each player needs a game card in order to play in Multiplayer, though.

Weapons

Zamor Sphere Launcher: Fires weak shots but has unlimited ammunition. When all masks are gathered, the user can hold 'R' to 'destract' (break apart) enemies.

Air: The user is given an electric weapon that can also inflict damage on enemies near the target. When fully upgraded, the user can press 'R' to hover in midair for 4 seconds.

Earth: Gives the user a claw weapon with a medium firing rate. When fully upgraded, the user gains a stronger resistance to attacks and can destroy certain walls.

Fire: Gives the user has a rapid-fire weapon that shoots flames. When upgraded, the user can press R to shoot a more powerful flame blast and walk on/in lava.

Ice: The user can fire beams of ice at enemies with a somewhat slow firing rate. When fully upgraded, the user can press 'R' to go into a sniper mode, and the chance of freezing enemies while not in sniper mode is increased to 25%.

Stone: Gives the user a rocket launching weapon that can lock on to faraway enemies, but has a slow firing rate. When fully upgraded, the user can destroy certain walls.

Water: Gives the user a weapon that fires a continuous beam of water. When fully upgraded, the user can walk on/in water and press 'R' to scan for nearby secrets.

Enemies

  • Bohrok - These enemies are the weakest enemies, they roll around and shoot at the player.
  • Visorak - Visorak are harder than the Bohrok and sometime come down from webs. They shoot ring shaped blasts at the player.
  • Nui-Rama - These fly above the player and will attack them after getting close enough.
  • Rahkshi - These are stronger than any enemies above and are rare near the start of the game, but more common at the end.
  • Vahki - Vahki are much like the Rahkshi, but stronger and more rare.
  • Nui-Jaga - Nui-Jaga are harder and shoot circle-shaped blasts at the player.
  • Muaka and Kane-Ra - These are very alike and rare. They attack by charging at the player.
  • Giant Bohrok - These are much like Bohrok, but instead shoot three blasts at a time and are larger. They are only found in Makuta's Domain.
  • Large Beetle - These are the strongest enemies and are very rare.

Bosses

  • Zaktan - Zaktan attacks with his Three-Blade Scissor and will sometimes dissolve into Protodites.
  • Reidak - Reidak attacks with his Buzz Saw and will sometimes taunt the player.
  • Hakann - Hakann attacks with his Lava Launcher and will sometimes jump into lava and summon enemies. He will also taunt the player.
  • Thok - Thok attacks using his Ice Gun and will sometimes jump away from the player and land on a far away pillar.
  • Avak - Avak attacks using his Seismic Pickaxe and will sometimes jump to the top floor of his throne room and summon enemies.
  • Vezok - Vezok attacks using his Water Harpoon and will sometimes run behind a wall of water and summon enemies.
  • Piraka - All the Piraka attack using their normal moves. Only two are fought at a time, Vezok and Thok, Zaktan and Avak, and Reidak and Hakann.

Extras

  • Unlimited Ammo - Gives the players weapon unlimited power.
  • Invincibility - The player is not harmed by enemies or the environment, except for falling.
  • One Hit Defeat - Gives the player the ability to defeat enemies, excluding Piraka, in one hit.
  • Disco Craze - The sky, fog and enemies flash in bright colors.
  • Crazy Colors - The enemies change colors.
  • Silhouettes - The zones, enemies and the player's Toa turn the same color as the zone's element. When using this cheat, Makuta's Domain becomes various colors, most notably white.
  • Makuta Mode - Makes enemies stronger, the amount of levels completed in this mode is recorded in the statistics list. Also, when defeated, the player has to restart the level.
  • Human Voice - Gives the players' weapons humanistic voices when fired.
  • Farm Animals - The Silver Toa's Zamor Launcher fires farm animals.
  • Piraka Party - When an enemy is defeated, a balloon flies from where they stood. The player can shoot these balloons to pop them, sending confetti flying. The amount of balloons popped is recorded in the statistics list.
  • Big Head - Enlarges some enemies' heads, making them easier to hit.
  • Tiny Enemies - Shrinks most enemies, making them difficult to strike.

Gameboy Advance Version

In the Gameboy Advance version, the player begins as the Toa Mata, eventually upgrading into the Toa Nuva. Additionally, the player can return to a completed level to find the Toa Inika's Kanohi and play as them.

Zones

There are six different zones on Voya Nui which the player has to pass in order to get to the next zone:

The Ring of Ice

Here is the territory of Thok. The enemies are Bohrok and Nui Rama. All enemies must be defeated and all Matoran rescued in order to move on. Then, the Hau Nuva can be acquired. After defeating Thok, the Kaukau is collected. Also, after getting the Akaku Nuva, a player can return with Kopaka Nuva to get the Iden.

Desert of Sorrows

The Desert of Sorrows is Reidak's domain. This level is played through as Toa Mata Gali, with the Kaukau Nuva being attained after defeating all enemies and saving all Matoran. After getting the Pakari Nuva, a player can revisit with Onua Nuva to get the Kadin.

Voya Nui Bay

This water area is controlled by Vezok. As Toa Mata Onua, the player must defeat Visorak and other spiteful creatures to advance. Here, the Pakari Nuva can be found. Later, with Gali Nuva, the player can come back to acquire the Elda.

The Green Belt

Zaktan's territory. Using Pohatu Mata, the player must defeat many Rahi to continue and find the Kakama Nuva. Later, the player can choose to return with Lewa Nuva to get the Suletu.

Nui Caves

These underground caves are Avak's domain. Playing as Lewa Mata, the player must travel through numerous tunnels to finish the level and find the Miru Nuva. After getting the Kakama Nuva, the Sanok may be obtained by returning as Pohatu Nuva.

Lake of Lava

Hakann's domain. The player controls Kopaka Mata on his way to Mount Valmai. The Akaku Nuva can be found here. After getting the Hau Nuva, the player can return to take hold of the Kanohi Calix.

Each zone is made up of three sub-zones. First are adventure-like zones in which the player must journey through the zone and defeat enemies along the way. The second sub-zone is a chamber where enemies appear. The final sub-zone is the level's boss. In the case of the Lake of Lava zone, there is a fourth sub-zone, The Temple of Light, where the player must fight and trounce Vezon.

Enemies

Letters

If all letters are collected on each zone, a word can be completed that will unlock various bonuses.

(Toa): Paints your current Toa golden.

(Voxa): Unlocks the Music of the Game.

(Krana): Unlocks a New Mask and a Sombrero Hat.

(Piraka): Changes Toa Weapon to a "Cluck Gun".

(Matoran): Makes Toa invulnerable.

(BIONICLE): Makes Toa able to defeat enemies in one shot.

Mobile Version

A Mobile Version of BIONICLE Heroes for cellphones was also released. The game has a similar objective to the PS, Xbox, Wii and PC version, but instead of normal enemies such as Visorak, the player needs to defeat Ussal-like Rahi instead. At the start of the game, the player is placed at the middle of Voya Nui, where a number of teleportation pads are located. The pads can be enabled by a certain amounts of points and it takes the player to a different area each time.

Storyline

The storyline of the game is as follows (provided by the opening screen):

Makuta, the arch enemy of the heroic Toa, has captured 4 noble Toa Inika and infected the very fabric of the Bionicle world. In a last-ditch move, the villagers of the island of Voya Nui draw upon secret knowledge to summon life from a sacred pool of Protodermis - the primal essence of the BIONICLE universe.

From the Protodermis energy, a new creature is brought to life. without form of its own, the creature is able to take on the shape and abilities of other characters. This, the island's final hope for deliverance, is you, and this chameleon capability is your unique power.

As you pick up an ancient statue showing the legendary hero Hahli, Toa of Water, your body starts changing and you gain the powers and shape of Hahli! And so the quest begins: to engage the forces of Makuta, to free the captured Toa Inika and restore balance to the land once more...

In the game, the player controls a shapeshifting character with the ability of transforming into other Toa. The initial playable Toa is Hahli, but as the game progresses, the masks of Jaller, Hewkii, and Matoran can be gained, thus permitting the player to transform into them.

Glitches

PS2

  • Sometimes (if not rare), you cannot finish the game despite having all gold awards except for the "100% Completion" award. Though sometimes you can with the reward when you finish a random level, but the award will be a copy of the question mark already there.
  • When you come back from a level, you may be able to target the Bohrok in the chamber above and kill them, but they will not respawn.

Gamecube

  • When approaching 100%, the Toa Inika may lose their heads during a level, causing the player to replay that whole level from the beginning.
  • Sometimes after a flower constraction is destroyed, the screen will indicate that a constraction can be built in that area even if there are no pieces nearby. When the player uses Hewkii to "build" it, he points his head downwards and nothing happens.

Xbox 360

  • After achieving 100% and winning the game, some of the Toa Inika may no longer have heads, torsos or arms. Only their chests and weapons appear.

PC

  • On "Volcanic Trail" in Hakann's Volcano, sometimes after you do the first Golden Constraction, while you're fighting enemies on the other side of the cliff on the little plateaus, there's a small chance you can cross the boundaries keeping you from falling off the edge, leaving you unable to finish the level.
  • When you come back from a level, you may be able to target the Bohrok in the chamber above and kill them, but they will not respawn.
  • Sometimes after a flower constraction is destroyed, the screen will indicate that a constraction can be built in that area even if there are no pieces nearby. When the player uses Hewkii to "build" it, he points his head downwards and nothing happens.
  • If the player is walking on water, comes across a buildable constraction and decide to build it, the player can change to Hewkii and still walk on the water.
  • In Piraka Bluff area, level one, there is one place where Nuparu can climb a rock wall. If the player doesn't stop Nuparu from moving, he'll keep walking right off the rock and land on the lava behind. From here, the player can use any Toa to walk upon the lava, even though this ability is strictly available to Jaller.
In the same area, there are two rocks that can be walked over to reach the lava on the other side of the land mass. From here, it is possible to grab a few blue pieces (which are worth 250 points each) that would otherwise only be accessible only after the game is won.
When walking here, the player must be careful of one particular area of the lava. In the far corner, there is one space that the character will fall through and infinitely plummet. There is absolutely no way to get back up, thus it is impossible to complete the level without restarting. The longer the player falls, the more his/her Toa will become distorted.
This also happens in the Flooded Lowlands, if the player walks across the stream at the starting point.
  • Sometimes a Toa's weapon will fire continuously, without the player having to press the fire button.
  • Occasionally, the Inika's heads disappear if they are targeting something that's outside of the screen's view.
Toa Inika Matoro with a Suletu stuck to the side of his head.
Toa Inika Matoro with a Suletu stuck to the side of his head.
  • In the Demo version, sometimes, when a Kanohi is found and worn, it just stands on the Toa's face. Even if changed to another Toa, the same Kanohi stands on the Toa's face. The Toa respective to the found Kanohi is unlocked (or changed to) only after a few minutes.
When this happens, the Kanohi can appear on any side of the Toa's head, even on the back.
  • If the player is killed, but is "pushed" into a nearby mask by enemies, the player gains control of the new mask. However, the player also retains control of the "dead" mask by selecting the empty spot on the mask taskbar.

Nintendo DS

The Fire Toa's weapon after using the Piraka Party extra.
The Fire Toa's weapon after using the Piraka Party extra.
  • If a door closes while an enemy is passing through it, the enemy will continue proceeding straight though the door.
  • If the player jumps at the hexagonal holes in the walls seen in the level "Cooling Vats", the player will land on an invisible platform just outside of the hole.
  • If the "Piraka Party" or "Big Head" extras is activated, the texture of some graphics, most notably the player's weapons, may glitch up. Using the weapon will eventually correct the model's graphics, but the ammunition will still be glitched.
  • In the level Castle Gate, if the player may walk backwards up against the wall in the left of where they start, they may pass through the wall. If the player keeps walking, the player falls until the screen turns black.
